GLASS FUSION PROCESS

Glass fusion is the process of
cutting glass and arranging the
pieces in an artisitc pattern. The pieces
are then fired in a kiln at 1450 degrees.
This melts the glass & fuses the glass
together. The kiln is slowly cooled for 6-8
hours in a harding process process called
anealing. The plates and dishes are fired
again in a mold to shape them in a process
called slumping.

DICHROIC FUSION

Dichroic glass has the unusual property of
reflecting one color while transmitting
another. Dichroic glass is created in a controlled
environment by spraying a thin chemical film on
the glass. Examing the dichroic glass at different
angles creates different colors. Making dichroic
glass is an expensive process. The glass can be cut
and fused like other glass. Dichroic glass makes
attractive jewelry.

COPPER FUSION

Pieces of copper are cut into a shape and then placed
between two sheets of glass and then fired in a
kiln in the same way as other glass fusion. During
the process the copper takes on a darker color.

SCULPTURED FUSION

The sculptured look is created
by pasting a special fabric on the
bottom of the lower sheet of glass.
During the fusion process the
fabric eats away the glass causing
the sculptured appearance.

MARBLED FUSION

Marbled fusion involves a
three step process. First
plates of colored glass are
stacked up to eight layers
high. This stack is fused in
a kiln. The flat fused plate
is then broken into large
pieces. These pieces are the
stood on edge and fired again
resulting in the oval, marbled
look.

SILVER FUSION

Pieces of silver film or silver wire are cut and shaped.
The silver is then placed between two sheets of
glass and fired. During the firing the silver reacts
chemically with the chemical compounds in the
glass resulting in a color change around the silver.
